Iowa R&D Tax Credits

Maximize tax savings for diverse businesses across industries, minimizing Federal and State liabilities.

What is the Research and Development Tax Credit (Iowa R&D tax credit)?

The Research and Development (R&D) Tax Credit in Iowa is a state incentive that encourages businesses involved in research activities. Calculated using IRC § 41 requirements, the credit offers two calculation methods. It's worth noting that the credit is not applicable to certain industries like agriculture, construction, finance, publishing, retail transportation, and architecture.

However, it does apply to sectors such as manufacturing, life sciences, software engineering, and aviation/aerospace. If the R&D tax credit surpasses the tax liability, the excess can be refunded or applied to future tax liabilities. The credit cannot be carried forward, and any modifications or eligibility changes must be appropriately addressed.

What are the Potential Benefits of the Iowa R&D Tax Credit?

The Iowa R&D Tax Credit offers several potential benefits for eligible entities engaged in qualifying research activities. Here are some of the key benefits:

Financial Incentive
Refundable Credit
Increased Cash Flow
Encouragement of Innovation.

Who Can Claim the Iowa R&D Tax Credit?

The Iowa R&D tax credit is open to C-Corporations, S-Corporations, LLCs, and Partnerships that meet the criteria outlined in IRC § 41. These entities can claim the credit if they engage in qualifying research activities within Iowa. The credit aims to encourage and support research and development endeavors in the state. It provides a refundable credit of approximately 6.5% of increased and basic research expenses conducted in Iowa. Alternatively, the credit can be calculated using the alternative simplified method, which amounts to around 4.55% of Iowa expenditures over the average of the previous three-year qualified research expenses.

The activities that qualify for the Iowa R&D tax credit are the same ones driving growth in your business.

How Do I Claim the Iowa R&D Tax Credit?

To claim the Iowa R&D Tax Credit, meet IRC § 41 requirements. Calculate using the Regular Method or Alternative Simplified Method. Regular Method: 6.5% of increased research expenses + 6.5% of basic research expenses in Iowa, minus a base amount. Alternative Simplified Method: 4.55% of the difference between current-year Iowa QREs and 50% of the average of prior three years' Iowa QREs.

Gather data on claim period Iowa QREs and prior three years' Iowa QREs. File federal R&D credits with Form 6765. Submit Iowa R&D Tax Credit with your Iowa Tax Return, include the required documentation (e.g., Iowa Form 128 or Iowa Form 128S), and meet the deadline.
